Start with your raw study scores
A VCE study score is a relative result for one study. VCAA calculates it from your graded assessments. VTAC then scales the score to make comparisons across studies. Scaling is not a fixed bonus: it depends on the performance of the cohort in that year.
Build the primary four
Your primary four includes your highest permissible scaled score in English, English (EAL), Literature or English Language, plus the next three highest permissible scaled results. English stays in the primary four even when another subject scores higher.
Add up to two increments
A fifth and sixth permissible scored study can each contribute 10% of its scaled score. A scaled result of 36 contributes 36 points in the primary four, or 3.6 as an increment. Group restrictions still apply: at most two studies from a group in the primary four and at most three overall.
Convert your aggregate to a rank
The aggregate is your total contribution. VTAC places aggregates on a ranking scale and assigns ATARs in 0.05 steps. An ATAR is a rank, not a percentage mark. Historical conversion tables are useful for planning, but the table changes each year.
ATAR and selection rank are different
Universities may consider equity schemes, subject adjustments and other selection criteria. These can affect a course-specific selection rank without changing your ATAR. Always check current course prerequisites and admissions requirements with VTAC and the institution.
